African Burial Grounds

They rediscovered the African Burial Grounds in 1991.They had thought the past construction had destroyed all the graves, but they were terribly wrong. They found over 2,000 bodies buried in the ground.there were a lot of commotion.People were debating on weather to make the spot a monument or not.It came out to be one of the most important thing to with slavery in New York.
It was very helpful for other people.Archaeologist came in and studied the remains. They were able to determine many things. For example, they were able to figure out what kind of work they did, their culture, where they came from and how old there are. However, they were not linked to names. They found many women, men and children.Almost half of the bodies were children.
Every skeleton were not linked to names but numbers.Skeleton 101 had the only symbol that has survived the years. It was a heart named sankoafa. It immediately became the main thing of the museum. It meant "learn from the past".One women was about 60 years old which is amazing because slavery was very deadly.Another women was found with a bullet in her ribs.
This was a very important museum. It shows us how African Americans were treated. They mostly died from being overworked. This tells us that everybody needs to be treated fairly and like other, not like an animal, like a human being.
This is what I experience at the African Burial Grounds trips.
